Local immunity in the skin : The skin immune system (SIS)
The skin, as the body's interface with the environment, is a unique immunological microenvironment. The skin immune system (SIS) is a complex of local immunocompetent cells and their products. Its cellular component consists of: keratinocytes, tissue macrophages, monocytes, granulocytes, mastocytes, Langerhans cells, tissue dendritic cells, T lymphocytes and endothelial cells. The humoral component includes: fibrinolysins, antimicrobial peptides, components of the complement, eicosanoids, neuropeptides, secretory immunoglobulins and a network of cytokines. SIS is continually exposed to agents from the environment (sun rays, toxins, antigens, microbes). It reacts by inflammation and immunoreaction. The cytokines, produced by the epidermal cells, regulate the whole process.
