The contributions to the education on the Roma suffering in World War II in the Republic of Croatia

The Roma population migrated onto the Croatian area in the second half of the 14th century, and its coexistence with the domicile population has often been marked by conflicts, discrimination and assimilatory tendencies. The pinnacle of such anti-gypsyist policies happened during World War II, when the Roma population suffered due to the policy of the pro-fascist Ustaša authorities, who attempted to annihilate the Roma in a genocidal manner. After World War II, the authorities of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia constricted the remembrance of the crimes committed against the Roma into the paradigm of the collective remembrance of all “victims of fascist terror.” The consequence of such a policy was a certain “collective amnesia, ” the existence of which continued after the breakup of Yugoslavia. The marginalization or the collective amnesia of the Roma victims was apparent in the Croatian historiography, too, where the subject was researched only sporadically. At the same time, an even worse attitude towards the subject of the Roma suffering has been apparent in the Croatian educational system, where the subject has been described in only a few words, without providing any more detailed information. Having in mind the mentioned marginalization of the subject of Roma suffering during World War II, the paper will analyze the recent contributions to the topic – educational handbooks and other relevant materials for teachers – and the ways they can contribute to the improvement of that segment of Croatian educational system. In the second part of the paper, the analysis will comparatively encompass such handbooks in other European countries
