Value messages in the educational process: music as a medium and a message
This paper proceeds from music, which if applied in teaching as a narrative medium, can be an important identifying factor for student / listener if its background is interpreted meaningfully. Thus this paper interprets song lyrics as a teaching medium whose meaning mediation can motivate students if the teacher places emphasis on understanding the background text of the song instead of emphasizing passive listening. The song is not just a mere decoration, something that accidentally fills one’s environment, whether a person is doing something or simply resting, but as a medium represents much more than that. Apart from melodiousness, while listening to a song, an individual at the same time also “listensˮ to “wordsˮ as a background element used by the artist to send a certain message. Many popular songs, especially if they refer to some of the famous / current events, may be useful as subject teaching correlations. The most impactful are those songs to whose characters and events the listener can identify with. If the music text is viewed as a narrative text with the lesson, it becomes an important medium in mediating value messages in educational process and becomes an educational factor. The paper uses concrete examples to analyse the use of music in the possible mediation of value messages in the teaching process.
