Molecular biology of breast cancer
Breast cancer is undoubtedly a heterogeneous disease at the molecular and clinical levels. The ability to integrate data across all known research platforms provides key insights and broadly defines subtypes based on a variety of expression profiles within the basic four breast tumor groups, each of which shows molecular heterogeneity. At a clinical level, such tumor characterization could help to more reliably predict the course of the disease, and in practice it could provide the best choice of individual forms of therapy, i.e. individualisation of therapy (personalized medicine). In this chapter, we tried to stress out the complexity of changes in breast cancer at the molecular level, as well as the complexity and diversity of their research, and the opportunities which new technologies bring. We have particularly focused on genetic research, as they have pointed out the possibility of knowing some parameters in the hereditary form of breast cancer, as well as the importance of knowing molecular mechanisms. There is an inevitable need for collaboration between scientists, clinicians and pharmaceutical companies to apply molecular insights into preventive, predictive and new therapeutic protocols.
