Resistance of olive table cultivars to olive fruit fly - Bactrocera oleae Gmelin (Diptera, Tephritidae)

Table olives production in Republic of Croatia represent very small part of total olive growing. Selection of domestic table cultivars was not developed for centuries becouse of reason that most represented cultivar growing along the adriatic coast, cultivar Oblica, has got advantage that it can be used as cultivar for oil production and table consumption. However, cultivar Oblica is very susceptible to olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae Gmelin attack, and also some other olive pests and diseases. In last few decades, mostly Italian oil and table cultivars were introduced in the respect of their better yeald, cold and Cycloconium oleaginum Cast. resistancy. During the one year small trial, conducted in the significant olive growing area of Kaštela near city of Split, middle Dalmacija, it has been shown that there is some difference in the olive fruit fly attack susceptibility. Even more, the most represented growing and nursery reproduced cultivar Ascolana tenera, showed great B. oleae and Sphaeropsis dalmatica disease, susceptibilitiy. The trial results showed that the most susceptible cultivars to olive fruit fly attack were St. Catarina and Ascolana tenera while the most resistant cultivar was domestic cultivar Dužica and introduced cultivars Picholin and St. Agostino.
