Topical anaesthesia with 1% lidokain intracameral anaesthesia as a good alternative to peribulbar anaesthesia in cataract surgery

The purpose of this research was to compare two types of local anaesthesia and prove that both are safe in the cataract surgery performed by phacoemulsification method. Two groups of 30 patients with cataract were examined. They were operated by the phacoemulsification method with two types of local anaesthesia: peribulbar anaesthesia, and topical anaesthesia-with 1% lidokain intracameral anaesthesia. All the patients had undergone an ophthalmologic. examination, preoperative preparation, surgery and postoperative monitoring in accordance with a previously envisaged protocol which was identical for both examined groups. Having analyzed our results we concluded that statistically there bad not been any significant difference in the degree of pain between the group with peribulbar anaesthesia and the group with topical anaesthesia during individual stages of the surgery as well as in the degree of postoperative pain between these two groups (p>0, 05). Analyzing the frequency of intraoperative (p>0, 05) and postoperative complications(p>0, 05), we established that there had not been any significant difference in their occurrence between the two groups. In this study we determined that topical anaesthesia with intracameral application of 1% lidokain is equally safe as peribulbar anaesthesia in the cataract surgery performed by phacoemulsification method and as such it represents a good alternative to peribulbar anaesthesia.
