Helene Druskowitz - the first ecofeminist

In Helene Druskowitz's last philosophical work entitled Pessimistic Cardinal Propositions (Pessimistische Kardinalsätze 1905) we can find several passages in which she mentions men’s destructive attitude toward nature. Moreover, men’s attitude towards animals is senselessly cruel, he kills or catches animals „partly out of his blind drive for annihilation, partly out his blind lust for possession, and partly making them victims of his gluttonous hunger“ (Ibid., 4.12). It is evident that Druskowitz sees men as the worst destroyers of nature and thus considers them to be the lowest of all natural beings. On the other hand, women are “not only worthier and lovelier beings, but are of a more perfect and noble ancestry which is reconfirmed by numerous relationships of women with the sea the mythologies […]” (Ibid. 4.9). These thoughs are scattered around her work and are not systematically developed. However, they very much resonate with what would 60 years later become "ecofeminism" in Françoise d’Eaubonne's influential book "Le Féminisme ou la Mort".
