Black fig fly – Silba adipata McAlpin (Diptera, Lonchaeidae), pest of growing importance in Croatian fig cultivation.

Black fig fly (BFF) is a pest of fig fruits in the Mediterranean area. Signifficant fruit infestations were recorded in Croatia during last two decade. Symptoms of fruit infestation and size of larvae are similar to medfly - Ceratitis capitata Wied (MFF), which attack fruits during ripening period. BFF larvae are white very similar to MFF larvae that are coloured closer to yellow. The damages caused by BFF were often mistakenly attributed to the MFF by the growers. During 2014. high intensity of infestation were recorded along the entire coastal region of Croatia. The first larvae (1, 7-2, 99 larvae/fruit) were detected in late April in the wider area of Dalmatia, especially in Neretva valley, Solin and Kaštela. From April to June infestation was recorded on cultivars Petrovača bijela and Bjelica. During August, strong attack was recorded on wide area of Dalmatia and Istria. In Istria (Savudrija, Umag, Motovun), cultivars Crnica and Šaraguja were most strongly infested, and later the infestation was detected in cultivar Petrovača crna with fruit infestation of 50-80 %. Cultivars Zamorčica and Petrovača showed half of that infestation. In Neretva valley during early September, samples of collected fallen fruits have recorded aproximately 0, 31 larvae/fruit to maximum 11 larvae in single fruit. In mid-September, sampling proces determined 1, 2 larvae/fruit and in late September and early October 1, 42 larvae/fruit. We can point out that cultivars that Bering fruits twice in one season, generally record a strong attack on fruits from the first ripening period with no major differences between cultivars. During second ripening period, more intense attack are recorded on dark coloured fruits. Based on our research we can conclude that this pest in our climate condition can achieve several generations during one season and can cause significant economic damage.
