Visual Poetics of Velebit in Illustrative Forms

Continuing preceding explorations of mutual relations between literature and visual arts through projects of designing books and picture books as art objects within primary teacher education, the idea of exploring visual poetics of Velebit inclines even stronger towards the interdisciplinary area. Motivating students to explore artistic possibilities of creating books as art objects, we encouraged them to explore various means of visualization of subjective experience of landscape in the context of children’s literature, thus intertwining the impressions of Velebit’s panoramas and botanical opulence with literary texts of their own choice. The project was envisioned as an adventure that explored new areas of research and their mutual references, overstepping the boundaries of visual arts, botanic and children’s literature and affirming new meanings and innovative spaces of creativity. Accentuating the experience of interdisciplinary research and affirming the creative aspects of educative practice of future primary education teachers, learning / teaching through production and individual projects resulted in extremely interesting work approaches in the field of illustration and individual interpretations of children’s literature classics. The project was realized through several cycles of drawings and series of unique artist’s books - painted and hand binded picture books that interconnect visual and literary forms. Although the initial goal of the project was the experience of the simple delight of creation and deeper understanding of the need to incite creative engagement in educative practices, the quality of accomplished works inspired publishing one of the works produced during the project. With unreserved support of the University of Zadar, the picture book Seasons - the work of second year student Iva Maglić, inspired by Velebit’s landscapes and Zvonimir Balog’s poem of the same tile, was successfully published at the beginning of this academic year.
